Day By Day Itinerary
3-Day Northern Tanzania Safari
For Real Adventure
Day 1: Tarangire National Park – Drive to Karatu
After breakfast, your African Overland safari guide will pick you up and drive you to Tarangire National Park, approximately 2.5 hours away on good tarmac roads. The park is named after the Tarangire River, the main water source for wildlife during the dry season.
Tarangire is famous for its large elephant herds, often seen gathering near the riverbanks. You may also encounter giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, bushbucks, and predators such as lions and leopards. The park also hosts one of the highest concentrations of bird species in the world, alongside its iconic ancient baobab trees.
After a picnic lunch and a full afternoon game drive, you will continue to Karatu for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater – Return to Karatu
After an early breakfast, you will drive into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, often described as a “lost world” because of its breathtaking scenery and enclosed ecosystem. Formed millions of years ago when a massive volcano collapsed, the crater is now home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.
During your game drive on the crater floor, you will have excellent opportunities to spot wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, hippos, elephants, lions, buffaloes, and the rare black rhino. The crater’s diverse habitats, including grasslands, forests, wetlands, and the shimmering waters of Lake Magadi, create an ideal environment for a remarkable variety of wildlife. Bird lovers can also enjoy sightings of flamingos, eagles, vultures, and other species, with more than 500 bird species recorded in the wider Ngorongoro area.
Enjoy a scenic picnic lunch surrounded by the spectacular crater landscape before continuing your game drive. Later in the afternoon, you will ascend from the crater and drive back to Karatu, taking in beautiful views of the surrounding highlands along the way.

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park – Return to Arusha
After breakfast, you will depart for Lake Manyara National Park, a compact but incredibly diverse park located along the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The park is famous for its soda lake, seasonal flamingo populations, and rich birdlife with over 500 recorded species.
You may also encounter elephants in the forest, troops of baboons, and the famous tree-climbing lions that Manyara is known for. The dramatic scenery combines lush forest, open plains, and the towering Rift Valley wall.
After a picnic lunch and a final game drive, you will drive back to Arusha. Upon arrival, you will be dropped off at your hotel, Arusha Airport, or Kilimanjaro International Airport, marking the end of your safari with African Overland.
